Many of us have experienced anxiety to varying degrees. Sometimes we may feel anxious if we are stressed out and have too much on our plate, or our anxiety can be triggered by a traumatic experience such as the loss of a loved one, starting a new job, or a breakup.
Just like so many of you, I’ve had periods of my life where I have struggled really badly with debilitating anxiety. While those were some of the toughest times that I have been through, I’ve picked up some tips that I hope can help anyone else that is struggling. First and foremost, it is crucial to understand that there is nothing wrong with you and that you absolutely will get through it. Your body is having an exaggerated response to a perceived threat.
During this time it is important to take deep breaths and remember that this feeling will not last. Sometimes during an anxiety attack or even a panic attack it helps to be distracted so call a friend, listen to music, or move your body.
For me, some things that help me when I’m feeling anxious include:
Identifying triggers
Exercise
Eating properly/drinking enough water
Consistent routines
Prayer/meditation
Hanging out with friends
Watching something light/funny
Setting specific times to let my thoughts run free
Cry it out
Cleaning/organizing
If you are struggling with anxiety, I would strongly encourage you to seek help and talk to someone. Sometimes when we talk about our fears and anxious thoughts out loud, they don’t seem so scary.
