Grounded and Balanced: How Ayurveda Can Help You Cleanse Your Autumn Routine

As the weather cools and the leaves start to change, autumn can feel like a fresh start—a perfect time to reset our routines. According to Ayurveda each season affects us in unique ways, and autumn is all about the Vata dosha, which is cool, dry, and unpredictable. This means it’s easy to feel ungrounded, but we can fix that by tweaking our daily habits. Here’s how you can balance your lifestyle as per Ayurveda this fall using simple Ayurvedic practices to stay grounded and calm. 





I. Start With a Solid Routine (Dinacharya)


In Ayurveda, routines are super important. A set daily rhythm helps counteract the restless energy that comes with the season.

- Wake up early: It might be tempting to sleep in with the darker mornings, but try getting up just before sunrise (if you can) to tap into that still, peaceful energy. It sets the tone for a more balanced day.

- Self-massage with oil (Abhyanga): This may sound fancy, but it's simple and feels amazing. Massage your skin with warm sesame oil before a shower—it’s relaxing, great for dry skin, and helps you feel grounded. 

- Take warm baths: Swap out quick showers for relaxing baths with calming scents like lavender or sandalwood. This not only warms you up on chilly days but also relaxes your mind and body.

- Meditation and breathing exercises: Take a few minutes each day to sit quietly or practice slow breathing, like alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana). These simple exercises help calm the mind, especially if you’re feeling anxious or scattered.


II. Prioritize Sleep (Nidra)


Ayurveda emphasizes good sleep habits to balance out the restless Vata energy.

- Get to bed early: Aim to get to bed by 10 PM. Staying up late can leave you feeling even more ungrounded, which is what we want to avoid in autumn.

- Create a calm evening routine: Stay away from too much screen time or intense activities right before bed. Instead, read a book, listen to calming music, or journal to wind down.

- Cozy up your space: Make your bedroom warm and inviting with soft lighting and a comfy bed. Add a cozy blanket or use essential oils like lavender to create a peaceful vibe.


III. Stay Active, But Stay Grounded (Vyayama)


While staying active is important, autumn calls for a more mindful approach to exercise.

- Gentle movement: Instead of intense workouts, try gentler exercises like yoga, walking, or tai chi. These help warm the body and calm the mind without overdoing it.

- Yoga for fall: Focus on poses that help you feel grounded and steady, like forward bends and child’s pose. Go for slower, more mindful movements rather than fast-paced flows.

- Get outside: If you can, spend time outdoors walking in nature. The fresh air and beautiful fall colors are perfect for clearing your mind and grounding your energy.


IV. Dress for the Season


Believe it or not, what you wear can actually impact how balanced you feel

- Layer up: bAutumn’s cool air can leave you feeling cold and dry, so wear layers to stay warm. Natural fabrics like cotton or wool are great for keeping your body temperature regulated.

- Earth tones:  Wearing warm colors like browns, oranges, and reds not only fits the season but can help you feel more connected and grounded, aligning with the calming energy of the earth.



V. Get Creative


Autumn’s energy encourages introspection and creativity, so use this time to express yourself in fun and fulfilling ways.

- Journaling: This is a great time of year to start a journal. Writing down your thoughts, feelings, and goals can help clear your mind and get rid of any emotional clutter.

- Try a creative hobby:  Whether it’s painting, knitting, writing, or photography, find something creative that helps you slow down and unwind. Creative activities are a great way to channel Vata energy into something calming and rewarding.


VI. Focus on Emotional Balance (Sattva)


Autumn can be emotionally tricky, making it important to keep yourself grounded and balanced.

- Stay connected: Don’t let the cooler weather and shorter days isolate you. Make time for friends and family—it’ll help you feel more supported and connected.

- Let go: Autumn is all about shedding what no longer serves you, just like the trees dropping their leaves. Take time to let go of old grudges or emotional baggage, and you’ll feel lighter moving into the new season.


By embracing simple Ayurvedic practices this autumn, you can stay balanced, grounded, and in tune with nature. Adjusting your daily routines, exercise, self-care, and emotional well-being to match the season will help you navigate the colder months with ease. It’s all about finding a rhythm that works for you, so you can enjoy the season feeling calm, clear, and connected.
