Ring in the Spring! -- Natural Serotonin Boosters

I find the most exciting time of the year is the transition between winter and spring. The air starts to feel lighter, the sun stays with us longer, and the green earth around us begins to grow and bloom. If you’re someone who suffers from seasonal depression like myself, this transition away from the cold dark days of winter to the light airiness of the spring is like taking the breath of fresh air. Spring is also a symbolic time for deep physical and mental cleanses, rejuvenation of spirit, and the start of a new cycle in our yearly timeline! The energy of spring time is enough to boost your serotonin levels. Serotonin is considered a natural mood stabilizer which aids in helping you feel happier, calmer and more focused. Serotonin is helpful in regulating anxious emotions as well as your sleep. According to this NBC article,“The receptive neurons, starved of serotonin through the winter months, are now flooded with this neurotransmitter, which is known to be important for mood regulation. The result of this flood impacting extra sensitive receptors may be spring fever.”

If you’re looking for ways to amplify your spring cleanse and revitalize your energy during this time — try incorporating these natural serotonin boosters in your daily routine:

  1. Take a daily morning walk in nature

  2. Bathe in the sun for at least 10 minutes

    1. One study, published by Innovations in Neuroscience, explores the possibility that sun stimulates serotonin production through your skin, which explains the urge to be outside as much as possible when it’s nice out, and why sunbathing appeals to so many

  3. Go for an evening run

  4. Get a scalp and/or full-body massage

  5. Morning cycle through a park

  6. Begin and end your days with a meditation

Spring journal prompts for thought:

  1. How can I dedicate this time for renewal spiritually, mentally, and emotionally?

  2. What do I need to let go of?

  3. What do I need to make space for?

"Spring is far more than just a changing of seasons; it's a rebirth of the spirit." - Toni Sorenson.

Happy Spring!

With love,

Jacqui
